Bio:

I started quilting in 1997 while my husband and I were living in Cold Lake, Alberta. I have been an avid quilter ever since! Now, I have my own studio and long-arm quilting machine and really enjoy sharing what I have learned over the years.

Because we moved approximately every 3 years, I have been involved with several different communities and guilds. Along the way, I have had the good fortune to be involved in many community-based teaching and group projects.

I started teaching beginner quilters in 2007 when we were stationed overseas in Belgium. I even once taught a class of Grade 3 & 4 students on how to sew small patchwork items. Through teaching, I also continue to learn.

My recent past includes Chairman of the Nanoose Quilters Group (2020 - 2022) and Co-Chair of the Parksville Workshops Committee (2021 - 2023), Vice President of the Parksville Quilt House Quilters Guild (2024) and President of the PQHQG 2024 - 2025.

Darlene LaCharité’s Bio:

Darlene has been sewing since childhood, though she focused on clothing until retiring from her job as a professor at Laval University and moving to Qualicum Beach in 2014. When she wandered into Serge & Sew, scouting out the fabric sources around Qualicum Beach, she was swept up into the world of quilting. It was love at first sight! She joined the Parksville Guild in 2014 and spent the first three years taking several courses in various aspects of quilting. The one thing that she excelled at from the outset was stash building. Over the past three years she has taught courses in paper piecing, scrap quilting and bag making.

Instructor: DiAnne Hill

image of DiAnne Hill

DiAnne has been sewing most of her life, starting at 6 years old making a cape for her favourite doll. When her daughter was young, she made clothes for both and made her first quilt using the left-over fabrics.

Back in those days cereal box cardboard was used for templates and scissors did the cutting. When rotary cutters and cutting mats came into existence the quilting world changed.

She has lost count of how many quilts she has made and still likes to take classes as there is always something new to learn. DiAnne has had a long arm for the last 6 years and enjoys long arming for others now that she is no longer treasurer of the Guild and has free time. Last year she bought 5 sewing machines to teach her granddaughters to quilt as she has a huge stash of fabric that needs to be made into many more quilts before she retires from her quilting career.

Workshop Information:

In this new workshop, you will make a quality Mesh Bag that can be put to many purposes.

image of DiAnne Hill

The finished mesh bag is 11-1/2” high by 11-1/2” long by 6” wide. The inside will have two pockets.

A kit will be supplied and is included in the price which includes the mesh, handles and a plastic insert for the bottom as well as the fabric to make this sturdy bag.

You will have a choice of fabric for your bag when you register for the workshop.

We recommend that you sign up IN PERSON at the January or February Guild meeting so that you can see the sample bag and the available fabrics – and most importantly, make your fabric choice. You will be given a sample piece of the fabric so that you can take it home to look for the matching thread for this project. If you are not coming to the meeting(s), please contact me at workshops@quilthouse.ca and we can make other arrangements (photos etc.)

Note that cotton fabric is not recommended for this project.

What to Bring to this Workshop:

  • Sewing machine and cords in good working order with the manual.
  • Jean needle – strongly recommended
  • Black thread and thread to match your fabric choice
  • 24” ruler by 3” or 6” is recommended and can be shared if you don’t have one.
  • Usual sewing supplies: pins, scissors (not fabric ones), rotary cutter, etc.

NOTE: A strong sewing machine is recommended as you will be sewing through plastic mesh and fabric thicker than cotton. It is possible that some of the smaller ‘class or sew day’ machines might have problems. You could follow along in the workshop completing some of the sewing and do the heavier seams on your home machine later if needed.
